In the Way of Love

When I was in seventh grade, I invited my best friend  to a summer camp about Jesus. I was SO sure that she'd like it: you get to swim, play sports, meet new friends, be in nature: how FUN. Yet in all of that, I forgot to mention the coolest part of all: you get to learn a lot about Jesus. For some reason, I was uncomfortable telling her that and yet super comfortable telling her that this camp was a 14 hour car ride away; like Jesus would be the deterrent but the giant road trip on a charter bus wouldn't be?
I think we are so uncomfortable with the idea of talking about our faith sometimes.
There's not really a good way to start this train of thoughts, and I tried to ease my way into thinking about it. But it's true! When I told some friends my plan on going to seminary, I told them in the corner of our friend's house at a get together. It was SO awkward, and I was so nervous that they were going to be weird about it for some reason.
Why is it that our faith is so vulnerable? My first thought is that it reveals so much of our souls to others. Admitting that Jesus changed my life means admitting my life isn't perfect. Yikes. My second thought is that we would rather admit that we are equally the creators and hosts of love and light, and that we can do all of these things on our own. Oof. My greatest thought, however, is that we are just really uncomfortable talking about Jesus because it reveals something that we believe in that others might not believe in. Plain and simple. and probably true.
How then, after identifying this, do we move into being able to live out our faith in our daily lives without these barriers? Is it as easy as gaining confidence? Is it dropping hints in the break room? Is it putting a sticker on our cars, laptops, or water bottles? What is it?
I chose Ephesians 5:1-2 to center this post, because it felt like the easiest example to follow: "Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."
When I think of what Jesus did for me, sought me out and chased after my heart just on the off chance that I would fall in love with Him just as He has with all of us, it makes it too easy to share God's love in every piece of my life. It can be as simple as putting a cool sticker on your car or your laptop, or it can be talking about what you heard in church on Sunday with a friend. It doesn't have to be extravagant, it just needs to be real.
God, help me to walk in the way of love so that on the off chance, one person may witness You through me.
